How to Play Frolf

Frolf combines many of the features of golf and Frisbee throwing. Like with golf, the goal of frolf is to try to get the lowest score possible. Players travel through a course and try to get through it with the least number of throws possible. Players try to throw the disc into baskets that are located throughout the golf course. After completing each basket, the player moves on to the next one.

A player throws a drive from a tee pad area. The entire hole lasts until each player gets a Frisbee into the basket.

Finding a Course

As frolf is becoming increasingly more popular, it is becoming easier for people throughout the United States to find courses and get started playing. Many of the frolf courses are free to play on, which makes it a very affordable sport. Not only that, but a disc is much less expensive than a set of golf clubs.

Types of Discs

Players will need multiple types of discs, including the driver, mid-range and putter. The driver is designed to have the maximum range, while the putters are slower and are designed to have greater accuracy.

What is the Course Like?

The courses have 9, 18 or 27 holes and have varying lengths. The tee pad is made of cement or dirt. The tee is identified by a sign. Also, many baskets have a sign to identify where the basket is located at.

Avoiding Penalties

A stroke is counted each time the player throws. When the disc goes into the water or out-of-bounds, there is a one stroke penalty applied. For the throw to count, it must be carried out at the designated tee pad area. Wherever it lands will be designated as the lie and the player marks the lie by turning over the Frisbee.

The player must throw from behind the lie. However, when throwing the disc, it is acceptable to step over the lie and follow-through.

Throwing Effectively

Like with golf, one of the key goals is to try to throw the driver as far as possible. The two main techniques that players use are the Reach Back Method developed by Rick Bays and the Bent Elbow Technique developed by Dave Dunipace.

Throws are the most successful when carried out while the player is well-balanced. Also, the player should make sure to follow-through to maximize the accuracy of the throw. When putting, try to keep the Frisbee flat and avoid throwing too hard.
